University of Maryland Baltimore
Because their space was needed for expansion of the University of Maryland hospital, several University departments needed a new home. However, the tight timeframe required Ayers/Saint/Gross and The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company to design and build a facility for labs and classrooms in 15 months.
The team completed schematic design in three weeks and broke ground in five weeks, with a total of 14 bid packages produced. The facility has 20 labs, 60 offices, and classrooms for the departments of medical and research technology, physical therapy, clinical pharmacy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacy practice, and administrative science and geriatrics. The University's award-winning film and video service also got production studios.
