University of Chicago
Completion: 2004
Size: 204 acres
ASG is preparing a comprehensive Campus Development Framework consistent with the University’s strategic academic directions. Because the campus is in the heart of south Chicago, land use, open space, and building sites will be critical, as will transportation and circulation. Interface with the community also is critical.
The western sector is the last portion of developable land adjacent to the campus core and home to several large institutions; therefore, their space needs must be considered carefully. They include the Biological Sciences Division; University of Chicago Hospitals; Physical Sciences Division; and Athletics Department.
The southern sector will be improved with thoughtful development along its edges while using surface parking lots as valuable building sites. Other issues include:
- Providing for needs beyond the foreseeable future for academic schools and units, administrative or auxiliary units, related institutions, undefined growth needs, and support services
- Establishing and open space network that makes these sectors feel more integrated into the broader campus
- Creating a character that includes amenities and services
- Encouraging revival of the adjacent Woodlawn neighborhood
- Providing parking and infrastructure support for growth.
Parking and transportation are central issues on this landlocked, dense campus, and the University is working with ASG to decrease its parking to square feet ratio. Strategies include new design and traffic management techniques; improvements to encourage the use of transit; improvements to all pedestrian crossings; addressing congestion, safety, and parking at specific locations; and focusing on serious congestion around the hospitals at certain times.
