Indianola, Iowa
Simpson College hired ASG to create a master plan to guide immediate and anticipated needs. The recommendations address functional relationships, building locations, creation of open spaces, landscape treatments, circulation, parking, service utilities, and phasing of development.
Two committees -- the Working Group and the Executive Committee - generated input from the campus and community and developed principles to direct the process. Simpson's philosophy, mission, and strategic plan were the benchmarks. The goals were to:
- Extend open spaces: This historic core is defined by trees, greens, and well-proportioned buildings. Future buildings and open spaces should be designed to enhance and extend these qualities.
- Maintain the small, intimate quality of the College. Many students select Simpson for the personal nature of the physical and operational functions.
- Create synergy among all functions. The best areas of the campus are those where academics, student life, and administration are in close proximity.
- Foster improvements for the city. The College should look beyond its boundaries to consider its effects on Indianola's growth. In turn, the city should work with the College to define and understand shared goals and vision.
The plan now guides the placement and design of several new buildings and is a successful fund-raising tool.
