Towson, MD

For many years, Towson University had to wait its turn in the Maryland public higher education budgeting cycle. Through development of the master plan, supporters and legislators are able to see the campus anew.

The primary goal is to transform the Towson from an introverted, confusing, imageless entity to an open, inviting, memorable place. It begins with a new entry drive leading to a great lawn that will reorient the campus with the library as its center. Smaller quads and courtyards transition to natural wooded hills and a glen beside the academic core.

ASG's plan takes advantage of the land by bridging from hill to hill to elevate pedestrians above busy streets and to link programs. The result is improved safety and the perception of a shortened walk across campus.

Options to share infrastructure resources with three nearby medical centers also are part of the plan. Greater connections with the community will be developed by improving walkways and biking pathways, directional signage, and access to public event spaces.

An open-ended framework of built and open spaces and daylit streams completes the plan.
