Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame hired ASG to update its decade-old framework plan with a new comprehensive campus plan that addresses two thresholds of growth. The first looks at 10 years of growth beginning in 2002; the Bicentennial Plan projects expansion to 2042 and beyond.

The planning process began with detailed observations and analysis of existing conditions. Through regular meetings with University officers, trustees, administrators, the faculty, students, and staff, those data led to a series of diagrams on open space, land use, building placement, parking, vehicular circulation, and other critical issues.

The next phase produced planning principles and conceptual diagrams to ensure the development of a plan that reflects UND's spirit and mission. Those principles are:

  • Stewardship of the heart of the campus
  • Maturation of the young campus
  • Planning for the extension of the future campus.

The principles and diagrams guided subsequent discussions on numerous factors impacting growth.

As the process became more detailed, the campus was divided into quadrants for additional study. The planning team was able to test and refine technical feasibilities in areas like building setbacks, service points, open spaces and entrances, general code compliance, and architectural character.

The final plan includes recommendations for:

  • Creation of a "Blue Line" within which the University would grow
  • Closing Juniper Road, which has carried daily traffic through campus
  • Reclamation and refurbishment of several quadrangles
  • Aesthetic and environmental improvements to parking lots and an overall parking plan that includes strategies for football game days
  • Reorganization of all athletic facilities through a mini-plan that ties them into campus more
  • Siting a new hotel
  • Consideration of a new college town
  • Siting multiple new academic and student life facilities.

Completion: 2002
Size: 1,250 acres
