Durham, NH

This intimate New England campus is between the seacoast, the foothills of the White Mountains, and upland forests. The goal of the campus plan was to build on these natural systems and the intimate character of the campus and town.

One of the physical obstacles was the passenger and freight rail line, which formed a boundary between the University and Durham. The plan calls for vehicular, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian passageways to run under the former rail bed to unify the campus. It also will improve safety, connectivity, and access.

Other changes are:

  • Redirection of parking to the perimeter to reduce traffic on campus and in town
  • New landscaped promenade to form a backbone to the academic core
  • New housing for upperclassmen next to the campus core
  • Apartment villages with a convenience store, food emporium, and service center
  • New Greek housing.

The master plan reconnects the campus to the town through shared resources, permeable edges, and improved access.
