Kingston, R.I.

The University asked ASG to develop a plan for sustainable development of a 53-acre parcel on its Kingston campus, 30 miles south of Providence. The project is a pilot for eventual implementation throughout the campus.

As defined by the University, the sustainable neighborhood is one in which human and non-human communities function as a whole. They minimize environmental impact, use resources efficiently, and enhance the quality of life.

The goals are:

  • Create an environment where each building and site improvement is a teaching tool
  • Create an environment in which all building, landscape, utility, and use decisions are based on sustainable criteria
  • Develop a model for a Green Campus to bring changes in the larger University
  • Encourage sustainability discussions
  • Enhance the image of the University as a leader in environmental research, education, and outreach.

Each piece of the plan also furthers the University's academic strategies and program plans.

ASG completed this master plan in association with William McDonough + Partners.

Completed: 2002
Size: 53 acres
