Charleston, S.C.
The city of Charleston assumed fiscal responsibility for the College in 1837, and since then they have enjoyed a close and productive relationship. The College is the oldest in South Carolina and occupies a campus designed for 5,000 students; current enrollment is more than double that.
The city served as a model for ASG's master plan because the College must carefully consider growth in the context of this unique environment. Density and the historic districts mandate that opportunities are to the north. This new part of campus will connect to the original core and public spaces through pedestrian pathways.
Increased student presence on campus and a new student-centered environment are major goals of the master plan and the College's Fourth Century Initiative. ASG proposed new campus residence halls to accommodate 40 percent of students, and a student center also is planned. Other new buildings will accommodate academic expansion. Design guidelines direct the planning of those structures so the intentions of the master plan and unique character of the College will continue into its fourth century.
New pedestrian spaces are among the plan's first completed projects.
