Lexington, KY

An unprecedented amount of collaboration went into Kentucky's Campus Physical Development Plan. The project was in response to mandates from the state and to a projected enrollment increase. It also supports the University's goal of becoming a top-20 research institution.

Faculty members, students, and staff contributed their respective knowledge and points of view, as did city representatives, to ensure that as many stakeholders as possible were involved in the process. Guiding principles were established to create:

  • Academic communities
  • A sustainable pattern of growth
  • Connections to the city.

On the campus, the master plan proposes development of smaller communities within the University with their own centers, including academic buildings, housing, student life facilities, and open space. All open spaces are connected by a network of tree-lined walkways for a unifying sense of place.

As a follow up to the main campus plan, the University and the city came together to jointly hire ASG to develop a College Town Master Plan. The collaboration with the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government reinforces the academic/community relationship through development of a housing corridor. Landscaped streets, storefront dining, shopping, and entertainment characterize the new college town.

Since completion of the campus plan, ASG has been retained by the University to design student housing (link) and has conducted feasibility studies for the School of Law, School of Business, School of Music, and School of Education.
