This dense urban campus is the state's public academic health and law center. With six professional schools and a major medical center, UMB is an economic and workforce presence in Maryland and in the downtown Baltimore community.
ASG was retained to prepare a Campus Facilities Master Plan that takes into consideration the needs of the schools of medicine, nursing, law, dentistry, pharmacy, and social work. The process included siting buildings and creating or locating open spaces to allow for growth on the limited land.
The plan resulted in the following outcomes:
- Stronger identity and associated outdoor public space of each school
- Redesigned major street on the western boundary as a linear garden/boulevard
- Clearer, safer pedestrian crosswalks to link the campus to its neighborhoods
- Stronger connections to the residential community
- Continued periphery parking development
- Stronger identity for the campus center
- Integration of the campus and the west side residential and commercial sectors to stimulate a vibrant urban environment
- Streetscape/open space networks for pedestrian linkages throughout the campus
- Clearer arrival thresholds
- Allowances for growth of research and teaching
- Incorporation of new student housing and student services.
