For many years, the Enoch Pratt has offered storytelling and readings for children in the Baltimore region. However, the logistics of these popular programs meant the children and patrons were vying for the same space.
The library decided to enclose an under-used garden adjacent to the Children's Room and convert it to two program rooms that maintain garden's character. ASG was hired to design and facilitate the changes.
One room is now a theater-like space with carpeted tiered seating and audio-visual equipment. It is used for storytelling, small dramatic performances, films, and readings. ASG chose a night theme for the room, which was designed in the form of a Greek theater. The draped fabric ceiling, complete with stars, has small white lights along the frieze. A compass star is in the carpet at the center of the room, and a solid copper roof marks the space on the exterior.
The other room presents a counterpoint with a day theme honoring the original garden. Its skylight contrasts with the copper roof, and the carpet has a bright sunburst in the center. Potted trees and the existing stone wall augment the garden theme, as does the small fish pond.
