Ayers/Saint/Gross designed a community center in South Eastern Washington, D.C. that is envisioned as a "Town Hall" for the neighborhood.

THEARC will offer numerous services and cultural and educational opportunities and is being built in two phases: .

  • The Phase I - Covenant House Washington Building is a two-story, 27,500 sf community service center that houses the administration, educational and counseling departments of Covenant House Washington. In addition, Phase I includes a Day Care Center for CHW with a tot lot playground.
  • The Phase II - Education and Arts Building is a two-story, 82,000 sf building that features a 375- seat theater with a shared public lobby, a full-size stage, orchestra pit and scene shop, a gymnasium with a regulation high school basketball court, two cross courts and bleacher seating for 250 people, a large dance studio, a recital hall, community room, art studio, a variety of classroom spaces for the partner programs, and a full-service walk-in community clinic that also will be the home port for a mobile van health care program sponsored by Children's Hospital.

In addition, there will be a fully accessible playground and over eight acres of wooded parkland available for outdoor recreation When completed, THEARC is expected to provide a dynamic showcase for the many talents of this emerging community.

THEARC includes the following member organizations: Building Bridges Across the River, Covenant House Washington, Boy's and Girl's Clubs of Greater Washington, Washington Middle School for Girls, Levine School of Music, Washington Ballet, Children's Health Project of D.C., Parklands Community Center, Life Pieces to Masterpieces Visual Arts Studio, a future Theater Technology Program and Technology Center.
