Baltimore, MD

The Bryn Mawr School, founded in 1885, is one of the nation’s premier schools for girls in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Located on the acre Gordon Estate at the edge of Baltimore city, the campus is a collection of 20 plus buildings located in the residential neighborhood of Roland Park.

The existing site for the North Building is currently a lawn edged by parking looking out to the residential neighborhood beyond. The North Building is the first in a series of new buildings proposed by the campus master plan, and will house the upper school classrooms and lab space. It is designed in the same fieldstone and white trim-work as the adjacent Garrett Building. It is located to form the north end of a central campus lawn, the Bryn Mawr Quadrangle, as originally intended by the 1930 Palmer and Lamdin master plan, and re-affirmed in the recently completed campus plan. This location closes the open space to focus it on the campus and its activities, not on those of the neighborhood beyond. The Quad will be surrounded by buildings on all sides with open-air colonnades. The landscape is simple, consisting of lawn and canopy trees, with a low yew hedge at the perimeter. The trees are added to those currently planted in the space to create the sense of a loose orchard. Brick paths are located within the colonnades. The landscape at the front of the building is equally simple, consisting primarily of lawn and canopy trees, spring bulbs and a few flowering ornamental trees.

ASG is providing landscape architecture services to Bowie Grindley Architects, who are the designers of the North Building. ASG is also the school’s on-call landscape architect. In this role ASG has designed a number of open spaces, including the new memorial garden. All of these projects are designed to meet the existing design guidelines for open space. These landscape design principals include: design consistent with the goals of the campus plan, high quality and durable materials, and strategic use of gifts to the school to implement projects.
