Salisbury University
Salisbury, MD
Salisbury University is located on US Route 13 at the southern edge of Salisbury, Maryland. Its location on the Delmarva Peninsula lies 115 miles southeast of Baltimore and Washington, DC. Within the city of Salisbury, the University is comprised physically of two principal segments, separated at a North-South axis by Route 13.
The construction of a new Teacher Education and Technology Complex is proposed for the southwest corner of Route 13 and College Avenue. This new building is planned to accommodate several education and media programs in a 165,000 GSF facility.
The new Teacher Education and Technology Complex is designed to feel smaller than its overall size and to be a modern interpretation of Georgian architecture. It is divided into four segments and creates three separate open spaces, two dedicated to lawn area and one to service and parking. The smaller of these two lawn areas is regimented and symmetrical, with orthogonal treed terraces and hedges bracketing the space to either side. These terraces provide seating for outdoor classrooms. Curvilinear paths cut through the larger lawn which is intended to be used for recreation, though it is primarily left un-programmed. Garden spaces at the two major building entries are located adjacent to plazas where seatwalls gather the radiating paths.
A focus of the project is to design the building using sustainable design principals. As such, the building is registered with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Strategies include: the reduction of site disturbance, the reduction of the development footprint, the lack of irrigation systems, the location in the parking area of energy stations for alternative fuel vehicles, and the overall reduction in impervious surface on the site. Additionally, storm water is gathered on the roof and channeled to the surrounding landscape.
