The Franklin & Marshall Arts Quadrangle is the first project to be implemented as a part of the new Franklin & Marshall Master Plan. The Arts Quadrangle unifies the performing arts and fine arts facilities around a central open space along a major campus boundary, College Avenue. The existing site was an overgrown landscape. This has been replaced by an open lawn and central path which terminates at a plaza with a fountain and sculpture. An elevated brick plaza crosses the roadway to begin the path, where a brick seatwall marks the entrance to the lawn. The first phase realized the walls, walks and lawn; the second phase will implement the fountain and sculpture plaza.

The Master Plan landscape design guidelines were developed in conjunction with the Arts Quadrangle which was designed and built during the final phase of the development of the Master Plan. The guidelines were developed to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the overall campus, and to provide Franklin & Marshall with a unified campus identity. Walkways in particular provide the critical “connective tissue”. Standard elements include: a hierarchy of paving denoting primary, secondary and tertiary walkways; consistent plant palette of trees, shrubs, groundcover and lawn; site walls and gateways; benches and seating; campus and street lighting; bike rack and trash receptacles. All of these elements are incorporated into the design of the Arts Quadrangle.
