Rutgers University
Camden, NJ
Ayers/Saint/Gross was commissioned by Rutgers University to develop
the Building Aesthetics and Environmental Design Guidelines and Standards
for the New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark and Camden Campuses. These
guidelines and standards provide the detail necessary to realize the
recommendations from the 2003 Physical Master Plan prepared by Ayers/Saint/Gross.
The Design Guidelines establishes a clear University identity and responds
to the individual campus' context
and character. They are used for all development, rehabilitation and restoration
projects.
Campus-wide guidelines define features, styles and the vocabulary
of a campus. At Rutgers University the campus identity is defined by
the quality of its open space. This open space in turn defines the
buildings that surrounds it. The Design Guidelines are therefore structured
around three proto-typical open space types, Connections, Places, Parks,
which together make up the fabric of the Rutgers campuses. These three
Spatial Typologies serve as a framework for the application of standard
principles to the design of paths, quadrangles, gardens, and buildings.
The guidelines create a standard of quality and identity throughout
the Rutgers campus while providing significant latitude for the University
and its design consultants in the design of individual projects.
