University of Maryland, College Park

The curved parking structure at the University of Maryland’s main campus has several purposes. It is available for large events, including Terps football at Byrd Stadium and programs at the Maryland Center for Performing Arts (also an ASG project with Moore Ruble Yudell), and for general parking. It also is a closure for the horseshoe end of the stadium and creates a service lane for concession facilities associated with it.

The long east and west facades relate to the arts center and stadium. The latter is masked by 56 metal panels with exposed structural tube steel that are 11 feet wide by 20 feet high. They are designed to receive applied graphics of the Maryland state flag and logos for all of the members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The shorter north and south facades are the vehicular entries.

The structure is bisected by a pedestrian passage that acts as a monumental entrance to the stadium. Each wing is constructed of precast concrete columns, spandrel panels, and wall panels. Ramps and decks are precast double tees with 10-foot floor to floor heights.
