City of Baltimore Parks and Recreation
The rowing club sits at the top of a hill rising from the Patapsco River and provides classroom space, meeting rooms, catering facilities, function rooms, weight and locker rooms, outdoor viewing areas, and boat storage. The uninterrupted view of Baltimore's skyline also makes it a popular venue for weddings and other events.
The form and imagery are derived from a study of 19th and early 29th century East Coast boat houses. The basement of rusticated masonry grows out of the hillside, while the building has a more traditional wood frame for public and athletic activities. As a series of rooms, the clubhouse progresses from an entry hall to a top-lighted octagonal trophy room and clubroom, terminating in an outdoor deck.
