The Student Health and Fitness Center integrates elements of health and recreation in one facility. A three-court gymnasium, natatorium, elevated walking/jogging track, activity spaces, weight training rooms, and locker/shower facilities are adjacent to the Student Health and Counseling Center.
The complex's siting and massing follow the principles of the campus's master plan, including the athletic master plan prepared by ASG. The combination of the field house, Lane Stadium, and the recreation center forms an outdoor courtyard and point of arrival from the south campus.
The exterior character evokes the collegiate Gothic style that dominates the core campus. Windows and other façade details pull together the large exterior and give a realistic perspective to the smaller program elements inside. In addition, the “hokie stone” entrance signals the importance of the building along one of the primary access routes to campus.
ASG was the design architect working with Hastings & Chivetta.
