Children's Medical Center

Ayers/Saint/Gross was retained to provide design services for the addition of retail, office, and hotel space on a prime parcel containing three structures from the 1960's. The Children's Medical Center faced the difficult decision of how to maximize the dense urban site without destroying the intrinsic value of the buildings, which provided parking, retail, restaurant, hotel, office, and apartment space.

The solution is a three-story sky-lit atrium walkway that serves as an internal street with retail and office space. The hotel was enlarged by 80 rooms on two additional floors. Ground-level retail was expanded to the sidewalk and along the interior street, while office space was provided on the second and third levels, above the retail space.
