Phase I is a 5 story building with a total of 130 beds, is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and teach the residents about sustainable living. Emphasis was placed on providing a comfortable environment for the individual within a community. The proper balance of study and socialization is encouraged by the delineation of spaces.

Unit types include traditional doubles with a few single units. Each floor is designed to house one community which is comprised of two ‘clusters’ with their own study lounges located at each end of the corridor. One common floor lounge is located in the middle of the plan, adjacent to the elevator. Overall building public amenities include an entry foyer, building lounge, kitchen, laundry, and hall director apartments.

This project is working to achieve LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and is pursuing LEED Silver through a variety of strategies including:

  • Treatment of stormwater prior to runoff to municipal system.
  • Low flow plumbing fixtures and dual flush water closets for water efficiency.
  • High performance envelope and mechanical systems for energy efficiency.
  • Specifying regional and high recycled content materials wherever possible.
  • Metering and display of water and energy usage to increase student awareness of sustainability issues.
