Master Plan, Renovations, and Addition
University of Virginia, Charlottesville
As the University's primary student center, Newcomb Hall provides space for dining, food service, student activities, recreation, and a cinema. It was built in 1956 and has seen three additions that resulted in a circuitous circulation system and a confusing building for students and visitors.
After a two-phased evaluation by Ayers/Saint/Gross, it was determined that it was important to restore a sense of community, clarify circulation, bring the building into code compliance, and upgrade mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems.
During programming, the University requested additional space for dining services and student activities. A "menu" of costs associated with renovation or improvement was developed to facilitate the decisions. The kitchen, dishwashing, and food service areas underwent extensive renovation, and contract dining rooms, catering facilities, and student service areas were expanded.
To improve circulation, first- and third-floor corridors were realigned and a new stair hall now links the first through third floors.
West Plaza was created as a unified open area with shaded seating, built-in tent facilities, and a major stair as a gracious path to the Central Grounds.
