Ayers/Saint/Gross developed a plan to accommodate the growing needs of the historic Wisconsin Union. The existing Union has two facilities, Memorial Union, an iconic campus building, and Union South, constructed in 1972. The plan accommodates student needs and services in the Memorial Union without the need for significant additions. This is accomplished by reallocating space into a new union building at the site of the existing Union South and creating modest additions to Memorial Union.

The new Union South building, sited in the Ayers/Saint/Gross Campus Master Plan, will accommodate growth on campus, provide year round student activity space, create a campus quadrangle, and be LEED certified when work is completed in 2009. The site design also incorporates a transportation hub incorporating a commuter rail stop, bus stop, bike station and parking structure.
