To meet growing program needs a new campus, Carolina North will be established on University land just north of downtown Chapel Hill. The brownfield and former airport will be a new model of sustainability with its own distinct style and character. The planning process emphasized integrated design solutions for efficient and responsible use of resource management. The open space network is organized around the airport runway and existing natural areas to create a monumental vista and natural landscapes. The final plan takes maximum advantage of the already disturbed area with an East-West orientation; this arrangement also allows a strong response to solar south.
