Johns Hopkins Hospital
Wilmer Eye Institute
Outpatient Surgery and Laboratory Building
Baltimore, MD
Completion: 2009
Size: 202,000 GSF
Cost: $75,000,000
The Wilmer Eye Institute is a world renowned department of the Johns
Hopkins University Hospital with distinguished research, clinical and
residency programs in ophthalmology.
Ayers/Saint/Gross is currently designing a new 202,000 gsf building
with five floors of state-of-the-art laboratories to support Wilmer’s
ophthalmological research programs and a 30,000 gsf outpatient surgery
center with seven operating rooms. A five-story atrium will encourage
interaction between researchers, provide a large gathering area for lectures
and events, and will bring natural light into the laboratories and offices.
Bridges across the atrium will connect laboratories and office suites,
while transparent glass walls in the laboratories will provide a visual
connection to the atrium and offices. Interactive spaces within and near
the atrium, including conference rooms, stairs and casual seating areas
will further enhance a sense of community among Wilmer researchers.
This new building will be located across from the historic Wilmer Institute
and Billings administration buildings. The Wilmer clinical and residency
programs will remain in the original Wilmer, Woods and Maumenee buildings
within the hospital complex.
Ayers/Saint/Gross is the Design Architect in association with Wilmot/Sanz.
