Ayers/Saint/Gross, in conjunction with associate architect Livingston Slone, Inc., is master planning the new Health Sciences District at the center of the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. The design team will also program and conceptually design the first building to be located in the precinct, which will include new space for the existing school of nursing, allied health programs, and the medical education program. The building design will have to respond to the harsh climate conditions using sustainable design guidelines to maximize energy efficiency, natural heating and cooling.

The building must be responsive Envisioned as a bridge between the university and a virtual link to the surrounding community, the Health Science Building will be physically connected by bridges to both the adjacent Providence Alaska Medical Center and to the main university campus. As a center for interdisciplinary education and research, the new facility will be a resource for health science education, with specific focus on nurse training in rural communities, interdisciplinary simulation, continuing education, and distance learning. Distance learning facilities will be designed with state-of-the-art technologies to connect to outposts in rural and inuit communities to facilitate health care, instruction, and establishing new methodologies for coordinating with medical professionals in remote areas.

Possible future phases of the Health Sciences District may include a school of pharmacy, school of medicine, community health clinic, medical laboratories, child care facilities, administration and alumni building, and parking structures.
