Square 103 Residence Hall
The George Washington University
Washington, D.C.

Completion: Summer 2007
Size: 101,622 gsf
379 beds

GW is adding student beds based on the campus master plan prepared by Ayers/Saint/Gross for six blocks of this dense urban campus in Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The eventual goal is to house all freshmen and sophomores on campus. The latest of these buildings is Square 103 on the site of what is now a surface parking lot.

In designing the 10-story facility, Ayers/Saint/Gross has followed master plan guidelines like articulated bays and an attractive streetscape. The quality materials and scale to the street are compatible with nearby private apartment buildings and campus structures. Square 103 will give the neighborhood much-needed housing relief and promote land-use patterns and transportation services that decrease reliance on cars.

Efficiently planned bedrooms are intended for occupancy by two students each, arranged in two bedroom/one bath or one bedroom/one bath suites, with single occupancy suites for community facilitators on most floors. The main lobby, two study lounges, a laundry room, and a community room with kitchen facilities will provide social and common spaces.

On the ground floor, a venue space with separate entry will have a food service or retail tenant for students and the neighborhood.
