University of Rochester
Sports Complex Renovation Study Phase II
Rochester , NY
Completion: TBD
Size:119,927 GSF
Cost: N/A
Ayer/Saint/Gross (ASG) has been commissioned to complete a second phase of design services for renovations and additions to the University of Rochester’s Sports Complex. The first phase, also conducted by ASG and completed in 2000, improved existing athletic and recreation spaces and provided additional amenities.
This second project phase involves demolition of much of the 1980s-era athletic building addition and providing facilities updates and improvements associated with relocating the existing field house to support NCAA track and field events.
The enlarged field house will provide new lockers, storage, restrooms, and increased indoor seating to accommodate athletic activities, as well as performances and other large gatherings such as graduation ceremonies.
New athletic support spaces adjacent to the field house will provide additional cardio-fitness facilities, team rooms, multi-purpose rooms and centralized office space. These support spaces will be flanked by a new main entry and lobby area, which will help clarify circulation and facilitate movement to offices in the “public zone” and the recreational facilities beyond in the “control zone.”
Like many other landmark buildings on campus, the new facilities will make an architectural statement towards the river, which runs adjacent to the campus and below the project site. This will allow the building to meld with historical context of the campus and surrounding landscape, while at the same time providing modern facilities that meet the University’s growing needs for athletic and event gathering space |
