University of Delaware
Laird Campus Housing, Phase III
Newark , Delaware

Completion: 2008 (phase III)
Size: 200,000 GSF, 600 Beds
Cost: $43,452,000

As part of a campus-wide effort to improve student life facilities, the University of Delaware selected Ayers/Saint/Gross to redevelop the Pencader Residence Hall Complex located on the school’s Laird Campus. The project removes outdated facilities with 750 beds and adjacent commons buildings and replaces them with 1,600 new beds and community spaces over a three-phased construction schedule.

In 2008, the final phase of the Laird Campus Housing will be completed. The 5-story building includes 600 beds, organized in communities consisting of residence semi-suites and floor lounges. Two larger lounges, study rooms, kitchen space, and laundry facilities are also included in the design. A complex fitness center, 6,000 sq. feet, is located on the ground level and will serve students from all phases.

When completed, the Laird Campus housing buildings, inserted into the existing context, create a residential village that brings a density and scale appropriate to creating community. The new residence halls front outdoor open spaces that encourage student interaction and provide much-needed recreation space. Pedestrian access to the site will be from a newly constructed bridge spanning a wooded ravine and providing direct accessible connection to the main campus.
